Default Quality counts for coaching psychologists

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE BRITISH PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

As the professional body for psychology in the UK, the British Psychological Society (BPS) sets high standards for all aspects of psychological practice and all members of the Society are expected to access appropriate training, supervision and continuing professional development to support the services offered to the public.

A set of draft supervision guidelines for Coaching Psychology practice were presented for the first time to the international coaching psychology community at the First International Coaching Psychology Conference at City University London this week. The British Psychological Society's (BPS) Special Group in Coaching Psychology (SGCP) will be seeking feedback from the professional community of practice to ensure these guidelines, which will be officially launched in 2007 in are useful and fit for purpose in supporting members of the BPS SGCP to support coaching psychology practice in the UK.

The guidelines are a significant step forward for the international coaching psychology community in terms of supporting a growing range of specialised accreditation and Continued Professional Development processes for psychologists wishing to specialise in this popular area of psychological work.

SGCP members have been asking for guidance to support choices both in Training & Accreditation and professional development so these guidelines have been developed to support members of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology in understanding how more generic professional practice and supervision guidelines for psychology apply within Coaching Psychology practice”

Coaching Psychology is an integrative and positive area of psychological work there are many challenges to the professional practitioner wishing to specialise in this area of psychology and as a leader in the international community of practice it is increasingly important for the SGCP to share it's expertise in this area of work as well as learning from international perspectives on coaching psychology practice.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Julia Shorter, Conference Assistant Press Officer, Tel: 07747 634486, e-mail sgcpcom@bps.org.uk

The guidelines can also be downloaded from http://www.bps.org.uk/coachingpsy/news/11dec06.cfm

Psychologists who are members of the British Psychological Society are encouraged to support the development of these guidelines. Feedback is being collected via two short surveys in 2007 so if you are a BPS member and would like to participate in this consultative process then contact sgcpppr@bps.org.uk
