Consultation on the new NOS unit on psychological underpinnings of coaching starts in October

ENTO has been funded to research and develop a new national occupational standards unit to cover the Psychological Underpinnings of coaching and mentoring.

During previous consultations with the Coaching and Mentoring sector the stakeholders requested the development of a new national occupational standards unit to cover “Psychological Underpinning” to address current developments in the field of psychology.

The sector stakeholders advise that the practice of “Psychology” is to be subject to statutory regulation and this has raised issues for the sector in term of the existing national occupational standards.

The unit will guide good practice for those who are not be considered as qualified psychologists, identifying the actions required by them. The existing national occupational standards developed during 2005/6 included units which overlap with the psychology NOS. The new unit is intended to address the issues which arise for the sector and develop standards for good practice in preparation for regulation.

The purpose of the project is to act upon the requirements/requests of the sector and to continue to support coaches and mentors to practice effectively within the sector, and also within the requirements of the new regulation by providing fit for purpose national occupational standards.

Changes to the NOS units may lead to changes being necessary to the qualification structures which were approved in November 2006.

The project is scheduled to be completed by February 2009.

Consultation meetings will be held and web-based consultation input will also be made available.
