Default UK Psychologists regulated by HPC from July 1st 2009

As of July 1st, the profession of psychology in the UK has become regulated under the Health Professions Council.

The UK government has regulated certain specialist titles (not the practice of psychology per se). The term psychologist has not been protected, which means by implication that the term 'coaching psychologist' can potentially still be used by anyone in the coaching industry irrespective of whether they have any legitimate claim to being a professional psychologist.

The only way a member of the public can verify that anyone claiming to be a psychologist is covered by the new regulatory framework is through checking the online register at http://www.hpc-uk.org/

Which titles are protected?
The following titles are generic titles to be used by any HPC registered psychologist:
  • Registered psychologist
  • Practitioner psychologist

The following are domain specific titles used by individual HPC registered psychologists:
  • Clinical psychologist
  • Counselling psychologist
  • Educational psychologist
  • Forensic psychologist
  • Health psychologist
  • Occupational psychologist
  • Sport and exercise psychologist
